Aesthetic Blueprint

45 min

The Aesthetic Blueprint is the single most important worksheet in The Composer's Brain.

It's not a marketing exercise. It's a forensic exercise. By the time you finish, you'll know — not guess — what you actually sound like, what you actually value, and what you actually want to become.

Take your time. Don't rush. The five steps below build on each other. The clearer you are at Step 1, the more useful Step 5 becomes.

When you finish, hit "Generate My Aesthetic Statement" — you'll get three polished versions in your own voice: an extended treatment for grant applications, a brief paragraph for program notes, and a two-sentence elevator pitch for cocktail conversations.

Aesthetic Blueprint Worksheet

Five steps. Edits auto-save. Completing all five unlocks the Statement Generator below.

1
Step 1 — Composer list + why it resonates
Name 5-8 composers whose work resonates with you. For each, write 1-2 sentences on what specifically resonates.
2
Step 2 — Standout moments
Pick 3-5 specific musical moments (a passage, a piece, a gesture). For each, write what stands out and why.
3
Step 3 — Musical parameter preferences
Two columns: Current (where you live now) and Areas to explore (where you're stretching).
4
Step 4 — Chosen 2-3 aesthetics, genres, or traditions
From everything above, narrow down. What's the spine of your work?
5
Step 5 — Your own draft statement
Write 1-3 paragraphs. Don't polish. Just say what your music is.
